If MokoHub isn't updating, or one of your services has gone quiet and stopped alerting you to new messages, this guide walks you through the most common causes and how to fix them. No technical background needed — just follow the steps in order.
MokoHub has two separate things that "update," and it helps to know which one you mean:
- The app itself — new versions of MokoHub that install over the old one.
- Your services — the tiles in your sidebar (Gmail, chat, and so on) that show you new-message counts and notifications.
The app update isn't downloading or installing
MokoHub checks for a new version in the background. When one is found, a small bar appears letting you know an update is available, then downloaded, and finally that you should restart to install. If that isn't happening, work through these steps.
- Make sure automatic updates are turned on. Open Settings and check that automatic updates are enabled. When this setting is off, MokoHub will not download or install anything on its own.
- Restart the app to trigger a fresh check. Fully quit MokoHub and reopen it. The update check runs at startup, so a clean restart is the quickest way to prompt it.
- Confirm you're actually online. Updates are downloaded from the internet. If other tiles are also failing to load, fix your connection first.
- When the bar says an update is ready, finish it. Updates install when you restart, not silently in the background. If you see "restart to install," click it (or quit and reopen) to apply the new version.
- Give it a little time, then check again. The app doesn't check constantly. If nothing appears immediately, it isn't broken — wait and reopen later.
"What is new?" and the changelog are gone
This is expected, not a fault. The old release-notes screen and the "What is new?" button were removed in a recent version. The update bar now simply tells you when an update is available, downloaded, or ready to install — there is no longer an in-app "what changed" list. Nothing is wrong with your install.
If MokoHub was installed from a managed store
If your copy of MokoHub came from an app store or a managed software channel (for example, a Linux Snap package), that store handles updates for you. In that case MokoHub will not update itself, and that is by design — check for updates through the store instead.
Still no update after all of the above
Sometimes there simply isn't a newer version published yet. MokoHub will only offer an update once a new release has actually been made available. If you've confirmed automatic updates are on, you're online, and a restart didn't help, there may just be nothing new to install right now.
If your organisation manages MokoHub for you, your administrator may need to publish or point the app at the correct update source. If you believe an update should be available and isn't, contact your administrator or use the Support link on the welcome screen.
Notifications from a service have stopped appearing
If a service like email or chat suddenly stops popping up notifications, the usual reason is that MokoHub put that tile to sleep to save memory. Sleeping (hibernated) tiles check for new messages far less often, so alerts can arrive late or not until you open the tile.
Here's how tiles behave depending on their priority:
- High priority tiles stay awake and deliver notifications in real time.
- Normal tiles (the default) go to sleep when idle and check in the background roughly every 5 minutes, so alerts can be a few minutes late.
- Low priority tiles sleep quickly and only check about every 30 minutes.
The tile you're actively looking at is always checked constantly, so a delay only affects services running in the background.
What you can do
- Open the service to wake it up. Clicking a sleeping tile brings it back to life and shows its latest messages immediately — a quick confirmation that the tile itself is fine.
- Mark important services as high priority. For anything you can't afford to miss (email, chat, SMS bridges), set it to high priority in the app's performance settings so it stays awake and notifies you in real time.
- Keep the high-priority list short. Every always-awake tile uses memory, so only promote the services that genuinely need instant alerts.
Note: on some managed installs these priority settings are locked by your administrator. If you can't change them, that's intentional — reach out to whoever manages your deployment.
OS notifications aren't appearing at all
If MokoHub shows a new-message count on the tile but your computer never pops up a desktop notification, the problem is usually your operating system's permissions rather than MokoHub itself.
- Allow notifications for MokoHub in your OS settings. On Windows, open Settings → System → Notifications and make sure MokoHub is allowed. On macOS, open System Settings → Notifications, find MokoHub, and turn notifications on.
- Turn off any "do not disturb" or focus mode. Focus, Do Not Disturb, or presentation/game modes silence notifications system-wide, including MokoHub's.
- Check the service's own notification settings. Many services (Gmail, chat apps, and so on) have their own "enable notifications" toggle inside the web page. Open the tile and make sure notifications are switched on there too.
- Confirm the tile isn't muted in MokoHub. A muted service won't alert you. Check the service's settings in MokoHub and unmute it if needed.
Quick checklist
- Automatic updates turned on, you're online, and you've restarted MokoHub.
- You clicked "restart to install" when the update bar offered it.
- The service you're missing alerts from is set to high priority (or you accept the normal background delay).
- Your OS allows notifications for MokoHub, and focus/do-not-disturb is off.
- The service isn't muted in MokoHub, and its own in-page notifications are on.
If you've worked through everything above and updates or notifications still aren't working, use the Support link on the MokoHub welcome screen or contact your administrator, and describe what you tried so they can help faster.
